Earth Day is Every Day: How 1,000’s of Fly Crate Packages Went Green

Did you know that over 33% of average landfills is made up of packaging materials?

According to a study conducted by the EPA and a team at Yale’s Center for Industrial Ecology, there are over 228 million metric tons of trash in landfills.

Nearly anything and everything can be found in a landfill. Diapers, cigarettes, Trump’s old wig, cheap flies, and kitchen sinks.

Over a month ago, we found out something extremely disturbing. We found out that our old, plain padded mailers were a part of that 33%.

It is not a common question to ask yourself, “where does my packaging end up.” Usually, I am thinking about how I can skip the next meeting and just go fishing.

As soon as we found that we were a part of the problem we kicked out the old packaging.

I spent days looking for an alternate source for packaging that was Earth friendly.

I was looking for packaging that met the 6 qualifications:

  1. Made of 100% recycled material
  2. Recyclable
  3. Compostable
  4. Stylish
  5. Sustainable supplier
  6. Sturdy & can take a beating from shipping

These are extremely important, from an environmental and a business standpoint.

At last! After nearly a month of testing, we finally found and settled with one supplier of high-quality mailers, EcoEnclose.

EcoEnclose is, truly, an amazing packaging company that offers Earth-friendly Shipping Supplies. Here is a quick video all about EcoEnclose. I think you’ll understand why we went with them.

P.S. they support our troops by donating and hiring veterans.

Our awesome new mailers are made from 100% recycled material and converted waste, and are completely recyclable, biodegradable, and reusable.

They are so close to being deemed edible.

For other companies, the cost is a huge concern. In fact, this switch to the new packaging was going to triple our cost for mailers. Individual mailers may not seem expensive, but when you multiply the cost by the thousands — it begins to add up.

That’s when we took a step forward and decided that it was time to put the environment first.

“To hell with the costs!” Let’s make the Earth a cleaner place.

We made the order and now have shipped over a thousand Earth friendly packages since. There are many changes that we are making to help reduce and eliminate our negative impact on the environment. We aren’t perfect yet, but we are drastically changing how we do business.

So, I challenge you to make a difference. I’ll be right there doing it with you.

I challenge you to collect at last 10 pieces of streamside trash and properly recycle it each and every time you go out fly fishing.
